Current projects
While only recently founded, FPHSI has a number of collaborative projects underway. These projects are grounded in the principles of local capacity building and sustainability.
Abu Dhabi – GCC Health and Development Investment Forum 2010: FPHSI manages a series of events aimed at sharing knowledge and capacity building. The first such event, The Abu Dhabi – GCC Health and Development Investment Forum was held at the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) in May 2009 – to learn more visit the Forum website. The 2010 Forum is currently being planned.
Substance Abuse in the Middle East: FPHSI has a number of active collaborations underway with organizations (public and private sector) that are engaged in the drug and alcohol abuse prevention and management space in the Middle East. Areas of engagement include: epidemiological studies to determine the burden of disease related to drugs and alcohol; community-based treatment; the application of web-based tools to assist people challenged by substance abuse; medical records systems and general support to strengthen human capacity to better prevent and manage substance abuse in the region.
Strengthening capacity for vaccines development and manufacturing in MENA: FPHSI is leading efforts to bring sustainable, appropriate vaccines manufacturing capacity to the region with an initial focus on North Africa. Faced with high burdens of communicable diseases (including childhood diarrhea) and the real danger of pandemics (such as H1N1 influenza), MENA requires local vaccines manufacturing capabilities as a matter of urgency.
Strengthening health services:FPHSI is supporting a number of appropriate technology and knowledge transfer projects in areas such as health information systems, disease management, health promotion, occupational health and safety and equipment and facility management. Projects are under consideration to support leadership development and continuing management education in the healthcare sector.
Natural and Herbal Medicines: The Middle East is endowed with a flora that has yielded and will provide a number of promising medicinal and health products. FPHSI is committed to support research and development and the ultimate clinical application of herbal and plant-based medications
Neglected Diseases: In close collaboration with The Foundation for Neglected Diseases, FPHSI is working to support projects aimed at developing treatments for neglected diseases currently afflicting the MENA region. This includes infectious childhood diarrhea and inherited blood diseases.
Strengthening Biomedical Research & Development In the GCC: FPHSI (in collaboration with Value Edge) is currently conducting a major survey of all biomedical R&D in the GCC and will work to strengthen research institutions in the region.
