FPHSI  OVERVIEW

The Foundation for the Promotion of Health Systems Improvement / مؤسسة تعزيز التطور في النظم الصحية (FPHSI) aims to increase the capabilities (skills, knowledge, expertise, responsibility, know-how, experience, confidence, innovation and entrepreneurship) of people working in the healthcare and life science sectors in emerging market/developing countries to support improvement and value creation (in terms of quality, outcomes, sustainability, governance, coordination, patient/user satisfaction and return on sector investment).

FPHSI is committed to strengthening human capital – the “missing link” in the numerous initiatives underway to strengthen healthcare systems across the globe. FPHSI aims to support all stakeholders working to address  “the urgent need to develop and strengthen the health workforce through increased education and training as well as strategies to sustain and retain all categories of health workers”  (Concluding statement of High Level Dialogue on maximizing positive synergies between health systems and Global Health Initiatives – Venice, Italy on June 23rd, 2009).

THE CHALLENGE OF BUILDING HEALTHCARE SECTOR HUMAN CAPITAL

Across the emerging markets/developing world, here is an urgent need to transfer knowledge, experience, training and mentorship to support the professional development of healthcare service providers, especially in the light of the rapid growth of the sector. Many countries lack experienced, local healthcare sector decision makers and there is in insufficient support available to ensure that projects are optimally designed, implemented and sustained.

WHAT DOES FPHSI DO?

FPHSI undertakes a range of projects and activities in with 3 core objectives:

Strengthening capabilities: Providing coaching, mentorship, advisory services and training to decision-makers in the healthcare and life science sectors to support personal development and better strategic decision making. This includes assisting in project conception and management to ensure optimal outcomes and sustainability.

Transferring knowledge and technology: Undertaking research and consultation to assess the true needs in terms of the technologies and services required to strengthen health systems. FPHSI  also helps to source appropriate solutions and manage negotiations for technology and knowledge transfer.

Promoting coordination and governance: The healthcare environment is characterized by the multiplicity of stakeholders and interests and FPHSI assists by encouraging communication and coordination between all the parties – from government to end-user or patient. Similarly, FPHSI works to improve governance and accountability in the healthcare sector which are vital to improve quality and confidence.
